Little Nan’s Fitzrovia

IMG_7898Miniature mannequins of Princess Diana make unusual lunchtime companions. But then there is nothing ‘usual’ about Little Nan’s Fitzrovia, which I visited whilst on a task for a travel writing workshop.

Opened in the spring of 2018 by Nan’s grandson Tristan, this quirky kitchen, bar and tea parlour has a growing reputation enhanced by its eclectic décor and artefacts.  ‘The best time for a drop in,’ says Kia, ‘is on a week day – though if you come back later once the boozy brunches and afternoon teas are over, we could fit you in for dinner.”

Sorely tempted by this prospect as I sip my Fitzrovia Fizz of strawberry juice and gin whipped up in the tardy slush machine, I study the menu creatively stuck into a vintage book. Albert Trotters’ Fish Finger Sandwich catches my eye, excellent value at £5. Next time I’m nearby on a Saturday, I will book in advance and make sure I don’t miss out. Or maybe book a special treat one Sunday? We all know our grandmothers make the best roasts and Little Nan (who lived to the ripe old age of 103) was no exception – handing down her secrets to award winning chef and grandson Matt. ‘Three Day Gravy’, anyone?

The chatter from the hen parties tucking into elegant finger sandwiches, scones and cakes within their fairy lit alcove flutters in the distance, a gentle background to the retro soundtrack. Other guests sit at damask covered tables, finishing off their generous breakfast at a leisurely pace. Why would you rush to leave?

When I return to Little Nan’s I face a dilemma. Grandkids’ or Royals’ favourite cocktails? Earl Grey sipped from porcelain tea cups glued to wine stems? A foray into the secret dressing up/props room?

If nothing else, bottomless booze on my birthday is a no brainer.
